Erie VA to host annual Suicide Prevention Awareness Walk

8/12/2015 (Erie, PA) –Erie VA Medical Center will host the annual Suicide Prevention Awareness Walk to remember those who were taken by suicide and to further build awareness of suicide prevention programs available to Veterans.

When: Friday, September 11; from noon-12:30 p.m. (weather permitting)

What: The Suicide Prevention Walk will begin with a brief opening ceremony led by the Suicide Prevention Coordinators. Participants will join together for a moment of silence followed by a walk around the VA grounds in memory of those taken by suicide and in support of efforts made to prevent suicide among Veterans. This year’s theme, The Power of One, focuses on the fact that one small act can save a life. Staff will be on-site to provide information and resources to all in attendance.

Where: Erie VA Medical Center gazebo located in the front of the medical center near 38th Street.

Who: Veterans, their families, VA employees, and community members are all invited to participate.

Why: Veterans are more than twice as likely to attempt suicide as the general population. That’s why Erie VA has programs available to address the unique issues many Veterans face. These programs are designed to help Veterans cope and recover from emotional or mental distress.
