New TeleMOVE! Program Helps Veterans Lose Weight from Home
Erie VA is pleased to announce the new TeleMOVE! Weight management program which gives Veterans the opportunity to participate in the MOVE! Program from the comfort of their own home.
MOVE! provides nutrition information and professional support to Veterans interested in losing weight and improving overall health. Through the new program, eligible Veterans will receive a Telehealth monitor, digital scale, pedometer, and MOVE! booklet which contains nutrition, exercise and behavior change handouts, all free of charge! Veterans will answer daily questions provided by the Telehealth monitor and track their weekly weight.
"I heard about TeleMOVE! at a VA health fair and I think it will give me the accountability I need," says Evelyn Toskin, Veteran patient at Erie VA. "I've had my share of health problems and I don't want any more. My goal is to get healthier and lose 15 pounds. With the support of this program I might just get moving."
Just a 10 percent weight loss decreases risk for many diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Weight loss also promotes improvement for many existing medical conditions. The TeleMOVE! program accommodates Veterans who have busy work schedules, live far from VA facilities, or prefer to work on weight loss individually.
Interested Veterans agree to participate using the Telehealth monitor on a daily basis and have no plans to relocate while enrolled in the program or plan on going on vacation for more than one week during each 90 day cycle. Veterans are able to participate in TeleMOVE for up to three, 90 day cycles (nine months) proving continuance of successful weight loss.
Participating Veterans will need to make a trip to the Erie VA facility for a one-time training session on the equipment.
Veterans interested in TeleMOVE! can contact their provider or call the TeleMOVE! Coordinator, Jennifer Beck, RD, LDN at (814) 860-2780.
